Transport chiefs ‘actively exploring’ Metro extension and new train stations

WAYS to further expand the Tyne and Wear Metro network after its long-promised extension to Washington are being “actively explored”.

It is hoped that the Metro's proposed new Washington Loop will be able to open by 2033, after major funding for the flagship project was pledged earlier this year.

That would mark the first extension of the Metro since 2002 and finally return train services to a town which is the fourth largest in England without a rail connection.

But councillors have now been told that transport chiefs are keen on more upgrades to the region's rail network.

A new plan is being drawn up that will outline the North East Combined Authority's (NECA) vision. A report to NECA’s overview and scrutiny committee this week states that the authority is “actively exploring plans to continue to develop the Metro and local rail network for more stations and future expansion”.
