Street robber wrapped wire around OAP's neck

Paul Mullen, jailed for robbery

A VIOLENT robber attacked a pensioner from behind by putting a wire around his neck before kicking and stamping on him on the ground.

The 76-year-old victim was returning home from a night out in Newcastle when he was targeted by Paul Mullen in a shocking attack.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that on July 15 this year the victim got the Metro from Haymarket to West Jesmond to go home. After getting off the train, he walked down a back alley near The Lonsdale pub.

Mullen was captured on CCTV loitering in West Jesmond Metro Station, looking over the railings where his victim, who already had a difficulty with his spine, was seen leaving the station. Subsequent CCTV showed the pensioner leaving the station and being followed by Mullen.
