NEW POWERS WILL MEAN CULPRITS' VEHICLES CAN BE CRUSHED

A North East council has vowed to use new powers to “cripple” serial fly-tippers.

The Government has this week announced plans to make it easier for local authorities to seize and crush vehicles used by criminals dumping waste.

Environment secretary Steve Reed said that he expects councils to “get much more aggressive” in a war on fly-tipping, which will also include using drones and mobile CCTV to find culprits.

The proposals could mean offenders are forced to pay the “significant” cost of their vehicles being seized and stored, instead of councils themselves.
