Development inspired by New York High Line

PLANS for hundreds of new homes, a multi-storey car park near Newcastle's Central Station and a New York-style elevated park are set to be submitted in a matter of weeks.

Network Rail says it is close to lodging a planning application with Newcastle City Council for a major transformation of an old rail yard.

The Forth Goods Yard site, north of Pottery Lane, is earmarked for 600 homes and a new multi-storey car park.

Major regeneration proposals could also see a disused railway spur repurposed to create a linear park which would serve as a walking route and cycleway extending west out of Newcastle city centre.

That project has been likened to New York's High Line, a former railway line on the west side of Manhattan that was due for demolition before being transformed into a park and is now a popular tourist attraction.
