A DAD and daughter who previously lived in Newcastle have been celebrating after picking up their Open University (OU) degrees together.

- By OWEN YOUNGER

David Stewart, 70, and his daughter Eleanor, 28, recently picked up their higher education awards on the same day.

David graduated with a BA in Arts and Humanities while Eleanor collected her BA in Primary Education at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

It was actually the retired teacher's youngest daughter, Martha, 25, who successfully applied for university to study medicine, who was the inspiration for him to fill out the OU joining forms.

Three years later, David in turn encouraged Eleanor to also sign up to study with the OU.

David, who now lives in Buxton, Derbyshire, and Eleanor donned their graduation robes on the same day and attended back-to-back events.
