Celebrity show prepares for huge comeback event

The Chronicle

February 06, 2026

THE countdown is on for the eagerly-awaited return of Sunday for Sammy which is all set to make a huge city comeback after five years.

- By BARBARA HODGSON

The celebrity show, dubbed the 'Geordie command performance,' last took place in Newcastle just ahead of lockdown in 2020 when it delivered its fans two memorable sellout performances.

Then, with no news to follow about the biennial event, it was feared that the fundraiser which supports local performers in the name of late actor Sammy Johnson might be over for good.

But early last year it was announced that Sunday for Sammy would be back at Utilita Arena in 2026 with another two shows in a day.

The welcome news of its February 15 comeback, which coincided with the 25-year anniversary of the first ever Sunday for Sammy show, was accompanied by the reveal of two new patrons Vera actress Brenda Blethyn and The 1975's Matty Healy who have both taken part in previous Sammy shows.
