Mass Defections to APC Threaten Democracy – CHRAN Warns
The Business NG
|The BusinessNG
The Center for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN) has raised the alarm over the growing wave of defections by opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a dangerous trend that undermines Nigeria's democracy.
-
Speaking in Uyo during an Annual Public Lecture marking the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, CHRAN Director, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, condemned the defections as self-serving and counterproductive to the spirit of democratic plurality. The event, themed “The Role of Opposition Political Parties in Deepening Democracy’ brought together stakeholders to reflect on the state of governance in Nigeria.
lsong warned that the persistent depletion of opposition parties through defections poses a serious threat to the country’s democratic survival. He said the trend, if unchecked, could turn Nigeria into a one-party state, stifling dissent and weakening the checks and balances that democracy requires to function effectively.
