Parliament scraps 76 irrelevant laws, from mines to telegraph wires

In a significant move, Parliament passed the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2023, aimed at revoking 76 redundant and obsolete laws.

The legislation, part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the ease of living and doing business, received unanimous approval in the Rajya Sabha through a voice vote. The Lok Sabha had previously cleared the bill on July 27.

Initially introduced in December of the previous year, the Repealing and Amending Bill targeted the repeal of 65 outdated laws. However, due to various reasons, the bill did not undergo discussion in subsequent sessions. Subsequently, the government proposed an amendment to include an additional 11 laws in the repeal list, bringing the total to 76.

Among the laws marked for repeal are antiquated ones such as the Land Acquisition (Mines) Act, 1885, and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1950. The bill also seeks to annul specific Appropriation Acts recently passed by Parliament.
