INDIA-CANADA TRADE SURGES IN 2023

The trade in goods between India and Canada has witnessed significant growth, reaching USD 8.2 billion in the first 10 months of 2023 compared to USD 6.9 billion in 2022, representing an impressive increase of 18.84 percent. Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, disclosed these figures based on data provided in Lok Sabha on Friday.

During the same period, India's exports to Canada also saw a notable uptick, amounting to USD 4.1 billion in 2023, up from USD 3.76 billion in 2022, reflecting a growth rate of 9.04 percent. Despite a challenging diplomatic environment between the two nations, characterized by strained relations following allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September last year, the trade volume and exports have shown positive momentum.
Trudeau's accusations of potential involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Surrey city led to tensions between India and Canada. India swiftly rejected these allegations, dismissing them as baseless and motivated.
