India to launch semiconductor research centre in 2024

The Ministry of Electronics Technology (MeitY) is poised to launch the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre in collaboration with industry and academia, beginning in 2024, announced Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for Indian leadership in semiconductor research. A group of global and national semiconductor experts have designed the center, positioning it to be a leading institution in semiconductor research within the next four to five years. The nature of government investment, whether grants or equity for intellectual property rights, is yet to be decided.

The establishment of the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre signifies India's strategic intent to bolster its capabilities in semiconductor research and development. Semiconductors are critical components in various electronics, from consumer gadgets to advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, 5G, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
