Hasina's win divides world on Bangladesh poll's fairness
The Business Guardian
|January 10, 2024
The recent parliamentary elections in Bangladesh have evoked contrasting responses from various corners of the globe. While several nations across Asia, Africa, and South America congratulated Sheikh Hasina for securing an unprecedented fourth term as Prime Minister with her Awami League (AL) winning 223 out of 300 seats, the United Nations, United States, and United Kingdom expressed reservations, raising concerns about fairness and human rights violations.

Hasina's historic victory came amidst the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) boycott of the polls, as the government invited numerous foreign observers from India and other nations, along with multilateral organizations, to oversee the elections.
However, the US State Department highlighted concerns about the arrests of thousands of opposition members and reported irregularities during the election. Echoing the sentiment of various observers, the State Department categorized the elections as lacking in fairness and freedom, urging Bangladesh to address violence reports and ensure accountability while encouraging all parties to reject violent acts.
The Volker Turk, the UN Human Rights Chief, called for the new government to uphold democracy and human rights, expressing distress over violence and repression against opposition figures. He raised alarm over arbitrary detentions and potential harsh conditions of detention faced by thousands of opposition supporters.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues to monitor the situation closely, acknowledging opposition's boycott and expressing concern over reported pre-election and election-day violence, as relayed by UN Associate Spokesperson Florencia Soto Nio.
In contrast, India, China, Russia, and various nations conveyed warm wishes to Hasina, underlining their support and commitment. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally congratulated Hasina and emphasized India's dedication to strengthening bilateral relations. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe praised Hasina's leadership, expressing confidence in her ability to further benefit Bangladesh.
China applauded Bangladesh for successfully conducting the election and commended the Awami League's victory. The Chinese foreign ministry emphasized its support for Bangladesh's post-election political initiatives within the bounds of the law.
