COP28: Nations reach 'historic deal' on transitioning away from fossil fuels

Following intense negotiations, nations have brokered a deal during the COP 28 summit in Dubai, advocating for substantial, swift, and persistent reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while orchestrating a shift away from fossil fuels within the energy system in a methodical and fair manner.

The COP28 climate summit extended beyond its scheduled duration, with negotiators racing against time to finalize an agreement. Ultimately, on Wednesday morning, the COP 28 accord received unanimous approval, prompting a round of applause in the plenary. Notably, this marked the third version presented to countries within a span of approximately two weeks.
COP 28 President Sultan al-Jaber remarked, “It is a plan that is led by science—a historic package to accelerate climate action.” He highlighted the groundbreaking inclusion of language addressing fossil fuels, a first in the history of climate talks.
