CLAY, CULTURE, CRAFT: BENGAL'S TIMELESS ART

Among the most renowned centres of this heritage are Krishnanagar and Kumartuli, each with a distinct identity yet deeply interconnected histories.

Clay modelling in Krishnanagar dates back over 250 years and is admired for its remarkable realism, intricate detailing, and lifelike expressions. Unlike many other Indian clay traditions, artisans here often incorporate real cloth and hair into their figures, enhancing their naturalistic appeal. This legacy can be traced to the patronage of Krishnachandra, who established potteries in the nearby area of Ghuri in 1728. The location, close to the Jalangi River and the royal palace, was ideal for sustaining a thriving artisan community.

Initially, potters were invited to create religious idols, but over time, their craft expanded to include figures for broader cultural and commercial purposes. One of the earliest known modellers, Mohan Pal, laid the foundation for a lineage of artisans whose descendants continue the tradition today. The Pal family remains instrumental in preserving and evolving this unique art form, catering both to religious needs and global markets.
