Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng’s impending three-day visit to Pakistan, announced on July 29, underscores India’s enduring concerns over the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The Vice Premier’s trip, scheduled from July 30 to August 1, coincides with the 10th anniversary celebrations of the CPEC, a project at the heart of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The CPEC, a sprawling network of infrastructure developments across Pakistan initiated in 2013, connects Gwadar Port in Pakistan’s Balochistan with China’s Xinjiang province. It’s the centrepiece of the multi-billion-dollar BRI, a project that has stirred widespread global debate since its inception under Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013.
