92% conviction rate, major probes, Rana extradition 2025 milestones: NIA

‘The National Investigation Agency on Tuesday said 2025 marked a year of major operational and legal milestones for the counter-terror body, highlighted by a conviction rate of over 92 percent, the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai attacks plotter Tahawwur Rana, and breakthroughs in several high-profile terror cases, including the Pahalgam and Delhi attacks.

In a year-end statement, the NIA said Rana was extradited from the United States in April to face trial for his role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people. The agency described the extradition as a significant advance in its long-running probe into the 26/11 conspiracy.

The agency also pointed to the deportation of gangster Anmol Bishnoi from the US. Bishnoi, a close associate and brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, had been absconding since 2022. The NIA said it is pushing for a speedy trial in a case involving alleged terror activities by criminal syndicates operating from India and abroad.
