A US nurse who was rescued from the conflict zone described the Palestinian doctors and nurses who have remained in the Gaza Strip as heroes who have decided to stay even though they know they may perish.

In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, Emily Callahan, the nurse activity manager for Doctors Without Borders, stated that "there is no safe place in Gaza" at the moment. Ms. Callahan was evacuated from Gaza last Wednesday, and she arrived back in the US over the weekend. "I obviously have a sense of relief that I'm home with my family and feel safe for the first time in 26 days," she remarked when asked how it felt to be back. However, I'm struggling mightily to find any happiness in any of it. Since having to leave people behind is the only way I can be safe," she remarked. Following Hamas' terror assaults on Israeli cities on October 7, which claimed over 1,400 lives, the Gaza Strip saw a violent counterattack. UN estimates indicate that over 10,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza as a result of the retaliatory onslaught. According to Ms. Callahan, security worries forced them to move roughly five times in a span of 26 days.
