|September 25, 2025
In the wake of a stern Supreme Court warning over delays in notifying the Saranda Wildlife Sanctuary, the Jharkhand Cabinet, chaired by chief minister Hemant Soren today announced that the final decision will follow the submission of a report by a Group of Ministers (GoM).
During the meeting, the cabinet approved 27 key proposals, including a significant land transfer for compensatory afforestation linked to Hindalco Industries.
Saranda Sanctuary: Decision Pending GoM Assessment
Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel stated that officials discussed the proposed notification of 57,590.41 hectares (575.19 sq. km) of forest land in West Singhbhum.
The GoM will conduct a thorough field assessment, evaluating the socioeconomic conditions of the tribal communities residing in the area and ongoing economic activities.
The findings will guide the state government's final decision.
The proposed sanctuary encompasses villages such as Ankua, Sahata, Karampada, Kudlibagh, Tirilghoshi, and Thalkobad.
The urgency of this matter has intensified following the Supreme Court's intervention and strict directives to the state administration.
