Quest to find next star football pundit is in a league of its own

It is perhaps every football fan's dream job to be a pundit. With a microphone in hand, you get permission to talk about your passion and get paid for it.

- Jennifer Cartwright on Last Pundit Standing

But it's a near impossible industry to crack unless you're a former footballer yourself.

Last Pundit Standing aims to even the playing field. Twelve fans are put through a series of challenges to uncover who could be the next top pundit, with a contract with BBC Sport on the line.

The show's layout is similar to other TV competitions as each episode consists of a small challenge, a big challenge and a face-off for the two worst performing contestants of the week.

However, it's edgier than its predecessors with a mixture of tests to evaluate how contestants can create engaging material for TV, radio and social media. It's also snappier, with episodes running just over 20 minutes. This is a competition show made for the TikTok age.

Former player turned pundit Troy Deeney and football content creator James Alcott serve as Last Pundit Standing's hosts and judges. What they're looking for is a fan equipped with an in-depth knowledge of the sport - someone who can explain the offside rule in a sentence and evaluate the past, present and future of every UK football team.
