TALENT AND DISCIPLINE

- LUTHO PASIYA

AT JUST 23, Amrisha Baboolall has already worn many hats — medical student, YouTuber, fashion model, pageant queen and former competitive swimmer.

Born and raised in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), she has dedicated her life to bringing together the worlds of science, creativity and music.

“I’m passionate about connecting people through different forms of expression,” she said. “Medicine, fashion and music may seem worlds apart, but for me, they are all ways of understanding and celebrating life.”

Before she traded her swimming goggles for a stethoscope, Baboolall made a name for herself in the pool.

She represented KZN at the Swimming South Africa Championships for six consecutive years, competed at the SALGA Games and completed the Midmar Mile eight times.

“Swimming taught me discipline, resilience and focus,” she said. “Those are lessons that still shape how I approach medicine and creativity today.”

Now in her final year at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Baboolall balances her demanding studies with her creative outlets.

“Medicine has always been about people - understanding them, healing them and being part of something larger than myself,” she explained. “But I have never wanted to lose touch with my creative side. Modelling, fashion and YouTube give me a space to express who | am.”

Her secret to managing it all is passion and purpose. “When you genuinely love what you do, you find time for it,” she said. “Some days I am on call until my feet hurt. Other days, I am editing videos or walking a runway. Each one gives me energy for the other.”
