BREATHTAKING Arran's stunning coastline

Further along the trail, Blackwaterfoot boasts what I would consider the island's best swimming beach.

Its pristine sand and clear water lie conveniently close to town, a blessing after a dozen or so miles on foot.

In Whiting Bay, swimmers can slip into the sea from a quiet beach next to the Seawinds playing fields. And back in Brodick, where the trail begins and ends, Fisherman's Walk offers a final celebratory dip with Goat Fell watching proudly in the distance.

Water temperatures were around 12-14C in early September. Brisk enough to take your breath away, yet manageable without a wetsuit, these swims became some of my fondest memories of the trip.

If walking and swimming fuel the body, Arran's food nourishes the soul.
