Son has 8 days to tear down garden home he built for his dying dad

Mark Jones, 55, spent £180,000 building the bungalow in Walmley Ash Road, Sutton Coldfield, in March 2019, hoping his late father could move in.

After Mark’s father died in October that year, his daughter and her boyfriend used it during the pandemic, before Mark moved in himself.

But Mark undertook the project without planning permision, and now has just eight days to meet a demolition deadline.

Mark, who initially believed he could build the bungalow under permitted development rules, has twice been refused planning permission and has lost an appeal.

He said: “We started in March 2019 and a planning officer came out the following month. He said I could not continue and needed permission.”
