Welsh: I went trainspotting for characters

TRAINSPOTTING author Irvine Welsh has said he creates his characters' physical appearances by travelling around studying strangers he sees on trains.
Welsh, 66, said friends often think his characters are based on them, but he insisted they were based on strangers he spotted on the London Underground.
