Mclnally: It's unfair to lumber Pressley with top-six demand but he can win over critics
STEVEN PRESSLEY was never going to avoid a bit of heat when taking over at Dundee due to his past allegiance with the Terrors across the road.
But Jim McInally fears Dens chief John Nelms has unnecessarily cranked that pressure up to boiling point before a ball has been kicked.
McInally fears that demands for a top-six finish only spell trouble for the new boss.
Pressley is set to get to work as the new man in charge on the Dark Blue side of the street this week.
The 51-year-old has been out of management since being axed by Carlisle United six years ago.
That together with his three-year spell as a player at United - has brought a hostile reception to his appointment from swathes of Dundee supporters still reeling at Tony Docherty’s exit.
Docherty was axed last month after finishing 10th, having led the club to sixth in his first season in charge a year earlier.
Nelms reiterated that the goal is “always top six” when he appointed Pressley last week.
But McInally reckons that's unreasonable.
He's one of the few players to have played for both sides twice. In 1997 he went direct from the Tangerine quarters into Dark Blues territory. But even he never felt the venom spewing towards Pressley in the past few days past week.
