Quiet power of Suwa Arana

On a quiet street in Maharagama, behind the crowds and clinics, stands a building that does not announce itself. There is no rush, no siren, no sterile echo. Only stillness—and within it, strength.

This is Suwa Arana. And this month, it turns two.

Sri Lanka's first paediatric palliative care centre, Suwa Arana was born from a grief that could have stayed private. When Indira Jayasuriya passed away in 2016, her father, Karu Jayasuriya, chose to transform that pain into purpose.

From that, the Indira Cancer Trust was born. And then came Suwa Arana—a house built not in her memory, but in the spirit of how she lived: with quiet grace, fierce love, and deep compassion.

Suwa Arana is not a hospital. It is not a hospice. It is a home. A refuge for families travelling from across the island to seek treatment at Apeksha Hospital.

Here, over 600 children and their families have found more than shelter. They've found care of the kind that restores dignity when everything else feels stripped away.

Barrels vs bombs

War and politics are full of uncertainties and surprises. When one heard US President Donald Trump bragging that the US and Israel had won the war against Iran at the end of the third day of bombing itself, one was reminded of US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a former Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War II, and his realistic assessment of war.
