Wet winter sees home rats surge
Sunday Express
|March 15, 2026
ONE of the wettest winters on record saw a surge in the number of rats invading homes, pest controllers said.
Northern Ireland saw a 26% jump in call-outs for rat catchers, while those working in Yorkshire and North West England reported a 20% spike.
Pest controllers also dealt with a 17% rise in the West Midlands.
Rentokil Pest Control had a 10% year-on-year increase in confirmed pest activity on average across the UK.
It warned climate change could result in rat invasions becoming the norm, as both 2024 and 2025 had significantly above average temperatures, with last year being the UK's sunniest and warmest on record.
