Volvo's best seller gets even classier

Volvo's XC60 has often been seen as a "sweet spot" in the firm's SUVs range. With a little more space than the XC40 but smaller than the sevenseater XC90, it has been a big hit - earlier in the year becoming the bestselling Volvo of all time. It rivals the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC, all updated recently. So now Volvo is following suit with a sharpened version of the XC60.

WHAT'S NEW?

Exterior changes are light - tweaked rear lights and a redesigned grille. There are bigger changes inside with a new display like that on the XC90.

UNDER THE BONNET?

There are just two engine options available for the XC60 - the T6 or T8 plugin hybrid. Both combine a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and battery.

Volvo claims 282mpg on our T8 test car - but you'll need to be using mainly electric power for most of the time to achieve this. Low CO2 emissions of 24g/km mean that it should prove popular with business drivers, too.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

The XC60 offers the kind of refined driving experience you'd expect from a Volvo. There's good visibility all around and the decent electric only range of 49 miles means you can saunter about for much of the time without troubling the petrol engine. Request a little more acceleration and the petrol unit will spring into life quite noisily too.
