WILL JACKS was left with a bittersweet taste after missing out on a 100. But the Surrey star showed outstanding potential in this victory over Ireland.

Jacks smashed 94 but holed out going for a six as England overcame their rivals by 48 runs with teenage spinner Rehan Ahmed taking four wickets at Trent Bridge.

Debutant Sam Hain, one of four uncapped players in the home side, also made an impressive start hitting 89 – the third-highest score by an England batter on an ODI debut.

Ahmed, 19, produced a magical spell of 4-54 to help dismiss Ireland for 286 as England’s experimental side claimed the second ODI for a 1-0 series lead.
