Alibaba has the magic touch to soar into cloud

November 30, 2025

ALIBABA, the Amazon of the East, is banking on a $53billion investment in cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence to drive future growth.

This strategy is starting to pay off. Markets responded well to news that second-quarter cloud revenue grew by 34%, a shade quicker than analyst forecasts.

That's not the only area of innovation. Quick Commerce revenue spiked 60% following the successful launch of its instant delivery service.

Yet these ambitious growth initiatives come at a cost. Heavy startup expenses were a key reason for an 85% fall in group operating profit, which fell to $0.8billion.

This spending also pushed the company’s free cash flow into negative territory. Profitability is expected to recover this quarter. But with the core business under pressure, there's room for disappointment.

The company's strategic focus on technology is sensible.
