Hydrangeas are shallow rooting so will benefit from a good layer of mulch that will act as a blanket and keep the moisture in.

Plant in partial shade - too much sun can dry them out, too much shade can reduce flowering.

Moist but not waterlogged soil will be best - clay is good, shallow chalk isn’t ideal for them.

The most commonly planted hydrangeas are mop-heads and lacecaps.

Mopheads, also known as hortensias, have large, spherical heads of flowers in pink, white red or blue.

These are often seen in seaside areas where they cope very well with coastal conditions.
