Disappointment as veterans' accommodation plan 'on the back burner'

PLANS to house homeless Armed Forces veterans at the former Raffles nightclub in Llanelli remain 'on the back burner', three months after the scheme hit a wall with the current leaseholder.

Helping Homeless Veterans-UK was granted planning permission in March by Carmarthenshire Council to transform the derelict old nightclub in Murray Street into 16 self-contained, one-bedroom flats for ex-service personnel.

The bold £1.2m project, which was first announced in 2023, will meet an urgent need in area, the charity said.

The building, which is in a prominent town centre location, has been empty for more than 20 years and is currently owned by Carmarthenshire Council.

The county council agreed to give the charity a 25-year lease once the current lease, held by another party, ends in two years time.
