Green flight tech cash and US tariffs lift for air sector
Somerset Guardian
|June 26, 2025
Aerospace firms in the West of England are set for a major lift-off following a £250 million injection into green flight innovation - with regional workers also poised to benefit from the end of punishing US tariffs.
The funding, jointly provided by government and industry, will support a string of cutting-edge projects aimed at driving the next generation of zero-emission aircraft. Companies including Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and GKN Aerospace will receive backing for their sustainable aviation work.
In parallel, the aerospace sector is celebrating the removal of 10 per cent tariffs on UK-made engines and aircraft parts heading to the US - easing a key trade barrier that has hampered exports in recent years.
Helen Godwin, the newly appointed mayor of the West of England, welcomed the announcement and highlighted its potential for the local economy.
She said: “Aerospace and advanced manufacturing are a vital part of the West's economy, so the removal of tariffs with the US is great news for jobs and trade here.
“This is good news for workers and companies in our part of the world.
