I bring that mentality with me

For many years, Doudy James operated in the shadows—watching, waiting, and working while others took the spotlight.
-
At Mamelodi Sundowns, he honed his craft quietly, gaining experience from seasoned professionals and sharpening his game behind the scenes. While some of his peers made the leap to the senior team, James’ journey was more patient, more measured. Now, after signing his first professional contract with Marumo Gallants, the dynamic right wing-back is finally stepping into the light. This is a story of perseverance, belief, and timing. In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma’s Delmain Faver, James opens up about his development, his influences, and why he’s ready to announce himself on South African football’s biggest stage.
Delmain Faver: Doudy, congratulations on signing your first professional contract. Can you share your thoughts with us?
Doudy James: First of all, I want to thank the Almighty for giving me this opportunity. It’s a huge moment for me.
DF: It’s a big step up from the ABC Motsepe League. You've played in the DStv Diski Challenge and gained that kind of experience, but this is different—you're practically skipping a league. How are you wrapping your head around that?
DJ: I’ve always been ready. At Mamelodi Sundowns, where I played for M-Tigers, I gained experience. At the time, when coach Godfrey Sapula called me up, he gave me confidence. At first, I had challenges, but I rebuilt myself and reset. After that, things just started happening because he’s a good coach. He motivated me and told me, “You can do it.”
DF: Can you tell us more about your experience at Sundowns?

The Chairman and CEO never panicked!
Siwelele FC had a rather difficult start to the 2025/26 season. The club was established in 2025 after the purchase of SuperSport United’s PSL status and was renamed Siwelele FC. To make matters worse, Siwelele suffered six defeats in their first 10 league games. Yet, the club kept faith in coach Lehlohonolo Seema. After all, the man has been around the block, and with over a decade in the dugout, he’s capable of doing the job. In this interview with Tiyani wa ka Mabasa, Seema opens up about stabilising the team and also looks back on the season.

Morena's 10-year milestone
With the CAF Champions League final looming, Thapelo Morena has an opportunity to celebrate the milestone of 10 years with Mamelodi Sundowns by lifting the biggest trophy in club football on the continent. The 32-year-old has been a true servant at Sundowns and is in his 10th year, having won all the trophies except the Champions League. When Sundowns won the Champions League in 2016, Morena was a member of the team, but was not registered in the competition. Soccer Laduma’s Tshepang Mailwane spoke to individuals who had worked with Morena to figure out why he has been able to last so long at Sundowns.
