How discipline is reshaping Bafana's DNA

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has never been one to mince words, but his latest squad announcement for preparation friendlies against 33rd-ranked Panama in March sent shockwaves through South African football. The Belgian mentor's decision to axe several established players from his squad for the Panama friendlies was a declaration of war against indiscipline that threatens to derail Bafana Bafana's World Cup ambitions, three months ahead of the global showpiece.

The Bafana Bafana numbers tell a stark story. Of the 23 players who traveled to Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations, seven have been omitted from the squad that will face Panama in two international friendlies. While Mohau Nkota and Siyabonga Ngezana were excluded for compassionate and injury reasons respectively, the absence of several other squad members paints a picture of a coach willing to sacrifice talent for character and team harmony.
"This is something between Helman (Mkhalele) and me," Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos explained during his recent squad announcement at the SABC. "We made an evaluation of AFCON three or four days after we came back and we saw things that couldn't happen anymore. We also saw things that we knew that we could not change immediately. So, we dropped them.
Broos' approach represents a fundamental shift in how Bafana Bafana operates. Where previous coaches might have overlooked behavioral issues to accommodate talent, the Belgian has established clear boundaries that no player, regardless of ability, can cross.
The coach's frustration with what he witnessed in Morocco, where Bafana Bafana were eliminated in the Last 16 at the hands of Cameroon, is evident. While he refuses to name specific incidents, sources close to the camp suggest issues ranged from tardiness and poor attitude to failure to follow team protocols. For coach Broos, these seemingly minor infractions represent cracks in the foundation that could collapse under World Cup pressure.
"I hope those guys who are not there now are putting themselves in front of the mirror and asking themselves why I'm not with the national team anymore," Broos stated bluntly.

Mbule gone! What next?
Orlando Pirates confirmed the departure of Sipho Mbule after just one season with the club. The midfielder leaves the Buccaneers under a bit of a dark cloud with many stories doing the rounds of social media platforms, as was the case with his departures from SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United, where he spent a season on loan from the Brazilians. The bad press around the 28-year-old midfielder, which comes from various media sources, is surely not good for his career, and this could see clubs being concerned about signing him or offering a long-term deal for his services. With the transfer window opening at the start of July, Soccer Laduma looks into some challenges he could face and where he could end up playing his football.

We got to the top at the right time
Winning automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership for Kruger United was not only about what happened on the pitch.
