Graham Taylor won five promotions in his three spells as Watford boss.

Appointed in June 1977, he took the Hornets from the fourth to the first tier by the end of 1981-82. After a short caretaker spell in the second half of 1995-96, he became manager once again in June 1997, masterminding back-to-back promotions in 1998 and 1999.

Dario Gradi's first of three spells as Crewe boss lasted a staggering 24 years, between June 1983-July 2007, minus two months out in 2003 to undergo heart surgery. A caretaker spell followed in November-December 2008 before a second permanent stint between October 2009-November 2011. Awarded the MBE for services to football in 1998, he was stripped of the honour in 2023 for his role in a sex abuse scandal at the club.
