Eddie Howe felt Sandro Tonali 'stepped up' in the absence of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes in Saturday's FA Cup win at Aston Villa.

Howe says star Tonali is 'committed' to Magpies

Sandro Tonali (second left).

Guimaraes has been ruled out for around two months with a hamstring injury.

But Tonali's second-half brace secured a comeback win at Villa Park before Nick Woltemade added a late third.

It was Tonali's first two goals of the season and came after a period of speculation and criticism surrounding the midfielder.

The Italian established himself as one of Newcastle's key players last season following an impressive run of consistent displays in midfield. But his performances have been called into question.
