Tough Tory bruiser and a firebrand

IN THE Great Depression of the 1930s, Norman Tebbit's father got on his bike to look for work, an image that would later become famous through his son.

Norman Beresford Tebbit was born in the working-class suburb of Ponders End, north London and went on to become one of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's greatest and most loyal supporters.

He represented the constituencies of Epping and Chingford as an MP for 22 years before receiving a life peerage, making him Lord Tebbit of Chingford, retiring from the House of Lords in 2022.

His father was a manager of a pawnbrokers and he'd bought his own house but he lost both in the Great Depression. By the time young Norman arrived at Edmonton County Grammar School, he had already developed his interest in Conservative politics.
