The humble genesis of Rome rebel
Scottish Daily Express
|April 26, 2025
HE DESCRIBED himself as "an outsider... someone from the end of the world" and his modesty never wained. Amid all the pomp and ceremony of Rome's papal protocol, he would answer his own phone and walk or take the bus, rather than ride in a limousine.
-
On the day following his election he slipped away on foot to collect his suitcase and settle the bill at the modest pensione he'd been booked in before the conclave began.
Francis was a radical pope of many firsts the first pontiff from the southern hemisphere, the first Jesuit and the first to call himself Francis. Before taking up office, he had never lived or worked in Rome.
He was viewed as a disruptor to the church's establishment and his reforms faced strong resistance.
Saving the planet, the plight of migrants and building peace became the pillars of his papacy.
