James Heappey apologises over blunder
A FORMER defence minister has apologised for the Afghan data breach as it emerged the details of MI6 spies and UK special forces personnel were also included in the leak.
The dataset released in error by a defence official included the details of more than 100 Britons including SAS troops and spies who had endorsed Afghans applying to be brought to safety in the UK.
James Heappey, who was Armed Forces minister from 2020 to 2024, offered a "sincere apology" over the February 2022 blunder, adding: "We let the country down badly."
