Right at end of summer, rosés are blooming

HERE'S something poignant about the summer drawing to a conclusion. While the season doesn't officially end until September 22, I think we can all agree the nights are drawing in and the first hints of a chill are in the air. And if that wasn't enough to spoil your mood, Wednesday was the last time the sun set after 8pm until April 17 next year! So why not celebrate the dog days of summer with some fabulous wines?

- by Matt Nixson

Whether you're barbecuing or picnicking, entertaining or drinking at home with family, we can all raise a glass or two to enjoying the warm weather while it lasts. And those perennial favourites, rosés and chilled reds, provide the perfect way to toast the finale of long, sunny days before we inevitably turn to deep, warm reds to keep us going through the winter.

Light-bodied wines go handsomely with warm weather — there should still be plenty to enjoy before autumn. And fruity Beaujolais, slightly chilled, makes for a refreshing summer red which is perfect with salads, seafood and pasta dishes - an elegant meal accompaniment that won't drown the flavours, nor be overcome by them. Cheers to endings!
