Scottish Daily Express
|April 24, 2025
ONE of the two private prisons in Scotland is being prosecuted following the death of an inmate.
Calum Inglis was found dead in his cell 12 days after contracting Covid.
His family have long campaigned that the 34-year-old did not receive the necessary care and treatment from the prison authorities in his final days.
Yesterday, Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC announced that proceedings would be commencing against HMP Addiewell in West Lothian.
Calum, from Edinburgh, was an asthmatic and serving a sentence for serious assault at the time of his death.
Historic
Announcing her decision, the Lord Advocate said: “I am committed to ensuring that the facts and circumstances surrounding Calum’s death are thoroughly investigated by the relevant agencies, fully considered by COPFS and aired in the appropriate legal forum.
“The family and their legal representative will continue to be kept updated in accordance with their wishes.”
Speaking after Ms Bain’s comments, the Inglis’ family lawyer described her decision as “historic”.
