Princess Royal's solemn tribute to Gallipoli heroes

THE PRINCESS Royal honoured Gallipoli heroes yesterday in a speech emphasising the importance of passing on the tradition of remembering those who have fallen in war.

Anne spoke at a service marking the 110th anniversary of the campaign, on the peninsula where UK, Irish, Australian, New Zealand, French and Turkish troops died in the 1915 clash.

The royal, 74, said it was a “great and solemn honour” to be at the event, remembering the sacrifice on all sides of the “unforgiving campaign”.

Anne laid traditional red carnations at the graves of Turkish soldiers at Turkey’s Canakkale Martyrs’ Memorial.

She then went on to another service at the Morto Bay French National Cemetery, where she laid a wreath at the Lantern Tower Memorial and placed flowers on the graves of the French soldiers who lost their lives during the campaign.
