Six on trial over 'murder' of man at home

- By Grant McCabe

Mother recalls moment son 'was gunned down'

A MOTHER has recalled to a jury the night her son was gunned down at their home.

Georgina Canney was giving evidence on the first day of the trial of six men who are accused of murdering Neil Canney.

It is alleged that the shooting occurred after Neil Canney went to the front door of the house in Renfrewshire, believing a friend was one of a number of individuals outside. The 62-year-old witness said she had been home with family as well as two young children when she then heard “a bang” quickly followed by another.

Yesterday, she told the High Court in Glasgow: “We obviously knew that it was a gun. They were firing a gun.”

The shooting of Mr Canney, 37, is alleged to have taken place in Greenock on Thursday, February 23, 2023.

Jack Benson, 24, Dale Russell, 31, Martin McCusker, 41, Brendan Balloch, 25, Kieran Hendry, 26, and Michael Munro, 27, all deny the charge.
