Thrifty mum and savings influencer Gemma Bird shares top tips for entertaining children on a budget this Easter

Family fun for less

Households are on track to be £400 worse off this year due to a triple hit of higher bills, taxes and benefits failing to keep up with the rising cost of living.

This has left some families having to make tough financial decisions, especially when it comes to keeping children entertained. With only a few days left of the Easter holidays, thrifty mum-of-two Gemma Bird is here to help. Better known as @moneymumofficial to 470,000 followers on Instagram, the cash hack expert and bestselling author is passionate about getting families more for their money.

"School holidays can be a financial minefield," she says. "There's the added cost of days out, childcare and just keeping little ones entertained at home. Easter in particular comes with extra spending on treats, activities and travel."

Gemma, who is working with streaming platform Freely, shared her tips for keeping on budget at Easter and beyond...

Don't splash out on days out

As the mercury rises, make the most of outdoor spaces - local parks, nature reserves and beaches are perfect for family adventures without spending a penny. Pack a picnic, bring a football or frisbee, and make a day of it.

National Rail also offers two-for-one entry and discounts at attractions around the UK including Bletchley Park, Chessington World of Adventures and the London transport Museum (visit nationalrail.co.uk/days-out-guide).
