HAVING recently seen a glorious performance of Puccini's Turandot at the Royal Opera House, I suddenly saw a way to improve it which I feel sure the composer would have adopted had he not died before the work was completed.

The opera is wonderful, but it would be even more dramatic as a TV game show.

The opera plot centres on a hazardous courtship ritual imposed by the ancient Chinese princess of the title. Any suitor wanting to marry her must submit himself to an ordeal of three riddles. If he answers them all correctly, she will marry him; if he fails, he has his head cut off.
