Another step closer ...assisted dying Bill passes Lords hurdle

THE assisted dying Bill has passed its second reading in the House of Lords, moving it another step closer to becoming law.

Peers allowed the legislation, which applies in England and Wales, to proceed to its next crucial stage after a debate that lasted more than five hours.

The Lords passed an amendment that will now see a special committee set up for further scrutiny.

It was agreed that the work will conclude by November 7, allowing enough time for the Bill to complete its remaining stages within

this parliamentary session. Sarah Wootton, chief exec of campaign group Dignity in Dying, said every stage the Bill clears "brings us closer to the safe and compassionate assisted dying law that people across the country are calling for".
