Brothers face retrial over 'assault' on firearms officer

- By Chris Riches

A STUDENT who broke a policewoman's nose and knocked another to the ground using a “high level of violence” in an airport fight was yesterday found guilty of their assaults.

But a jury failed to reach a verdict on whether Mohammed Fahir Amaaz was also guilty — along with his brother Muhammad Amaad - of assaulting a male police officer during the same violent incident.

Amaaz, 20, floored PC Lydia Ward with a punch to the face and forced PC Ellie Cook to the ground at Manchester Airport last July.

A court heard both officers and a male colleague, PC Zachary Marsden, approached him at a car park ticket machine after a report was received that he had headbutted a customer in the Starbucks cafe in Terminal 2 arrivals.

But the prosecution said Amaaz resisted arrest and inflicted a “high level of violence” on the Greater Manchester Police officers.

Amaaz was yesterday convicted of assaulting PC Ward causing actual bodily harm, and assaulting PC Cook and the Starbucks customer, Abdulkareem Ismaeila.
