Morgan Watson was raised in St. Joseph, Louisiana, where he grew up picking cotton, just as his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents did.

As a child, he enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together, a trait that foreshadowed his future career in engineering. In his teenage years, he worked at a hardware store, where his boss noticed his impressive report card and recognized his talent for mathematics and science. He encouraged Watson, telling him he would make a great engineer someday. Although Watson didn't initially understand what an engineer did, his curiosity led him to the public library, where he began reading about engineering. Around the same time, he also developed an interest in space. This passion motivated him to major in engineering at Southern University, a historically black university in Baton Rouge.
