It's ok to say No: The power of setting boundaries
Scoop USA Newspaper
|ScoopDigital, Vol. 6, No. 8
In a world where everyone wants to be liked, helpful, and appreciated, saying “no” can feel uncomfortable.
-
Most of us don't want to disappoint others — we want to be seen as dependable, caring, and kind. But in trying to please everyone, many of us end up overcommitting, overextending, and ultimately overwhelming ourselves. The truth is, sometimes, the most powerful and healthy word you can say is “no.”
For many people, “no” feels like a harsh word — like a rejection that will hurt someone’s feelings or make them upset. But learning to say “no” is not only okay — it’s necessary for your well-being. It can save you time, energy, money, and peace of mind. It can also help you maintain healthy relationships because when you set boundaries, you teach others how to treat you with respect.
Why We Struggle to Say No
So why is it so hard to say no?
Because we care.
Because we don’t want to seem selfish or rude.
Because we’re afraid of what others might think of us.
Because we don’t want to miss out.
Because we feel obligated.
Many of us have been taught that saying “yes” makes us good people — good friends, good family members, and good employees. But always saying yes can lead to burnout, resentment, and regret. You may find yourself giving time and energy to things you don’t believe in, can’t afford, or simply don’t have the capacity to handle.
