It never fails to amaze me—the depths of cruelty and debauchery that humanity sinks to always disturb my spirit in a way that makes me wonder if society has been doomed from the beginning.

- by Lorraine Lavender-Sams

This week’s selection, “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote, is a novel that gave me nightmares when I first read it decades ago, as did the subsequent movie. Truman Capote has always been a controversial personality. Born in 1924, Capote was unapologetically openly gay and resolved never to change himself for anyone. He became an early icon for the gay community, and regardless of whether or not it offended the public, he freely expressed his eccentric style and attitude.
