Every year, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) reveals the best beaches across the country, recognising those that excel in coastal management and sustainable tourism.

This year, 70 beaches and pilot sites have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag status, highlighting their commitment to cleanliness, safety, and environmental management. Among the 70 beaches, 12 are in KwaZulu-Natal, with eight of these situated along the picturesque South Coast.

The Western Cape boasts 21 Blue Flag beaches, while the Eastern Cape is home to 17. Notably, McDougalls Bay in Port Nolloth, Northern Cape, has also received Blue Flag status as a pilot site. This eco-label not only assures visitors of high standards but also enhances the reputation of these destinations, driving local economic growth through tourism.

Here are some of the beaches where you can splash around safely this summer.

One of the standout beaches is Muizenberg Beach in False Bay. Known for its iconic colourful beach huts and reliable surf breaks, Muizenberg is an ideal spot for beginners looking to learn how to surf.

The gentle, rolling waves create a safe environment, and numerous surf schools and rental shops are available for those eager to get started. The beach's warm Indian Ocean waters are a significant draw, especially for families seeking a relaxing day by the shore.
